Shards (Greek: ostrakon) are awarded to polites in the Theban Tribunal who are found guilty of a number of offences against the Heretic polity, including but not limited to failing to perform their duties as an archai, instigating a criminal investigation before the Judicial Board which does not result in a conviction, being convicted of a Low Crime and several other reasons, as described in The Sundered Eagle 28. Any polites possessing one or more shards is potentially subject to a Vote of Ostracism at the Tribunal. Shards may be negated by contrition recognised by the Conciliatory Board or by being offset by tokens.
