The Maritime Republics included Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi. These Republics were built on trade and maritime power, with trade routes being established through naval force, usually in conflict with one another. This is the cradle of the banking industry, with the first bank established in Venice in 1157, as well as the centers of shipbuilding.
