The term Archmage denotes a magus of exceptional magical prowess and acclaim. The Latin form of the title is Archmagus (fem. "Archmaga", plural "Archmagi"), but the English form commonly appears in Ars Magica books.
A free Social Status Virtue, "Archmage", is presented in Guardians of the Forests[1] to denote an archmage's exalted status. This Virtue is presumably not intended for young magi, but rather for advanced characters such Darius of Flambeau.
Archmagi in the Rhine Tribunal
In the Rhine Tribunal, an Archmagus is an official position that can be obtained in a regulated manner and brings with it legal as well as political benefits[2]. It is the highest formal rank for magi, above master.
There are about a dozen Archmagi in the Rhine Tribunal: more than in most other Tribunals[2].
No Archmagi in the Thebes Tribunal
The magi of the Thebes Tribunal do not recognize titles of rank, including Archmage[3].
Becoming an Archmage
The process for becoming an Archmage is described in Guardians of the Forests[4]. There are several requirements, including the need to defeat a current Archmage in a special contest of that Archmage's choosing.
