Spell Binding is a Minor Hermetic Virtue. It is a Mystery that is no longer held by exclusively by mystery cults, having spread to wide use in the Order[1]. Spell Binding allows a magus to bind a spirit into maintaining a spell indefinitely[2]. This is one of only a few ways a magus in Fifth Edition can achieve permanent magical effects.
Spell binding requires binding powerful spirits to power moderate spells, and also requires a Ritual so that both time and raw vis are spent. Prudent use can, however, save raw vis (even considering the raw vis contained in the spirit) and the mystery allows for the creation of "instant" magic items or permanent effects.
Use of this virtue requires the casting of the ritual spell Sustain a Spell of (Form), so that raw vis is still required to create permanent-duration effects. Unlike an enchanted item, however, the bound spell need not emanate from the physical container, although the two are mystically linked.
