A decree of contrition is a formal acknowledgement by the [[Conciliatory Board]] in the [[Theban Tribunal]] that a [[polites]] has attempted to make amends (usually by the offer of reparations, only accepted if the decree is issued) for a former misdeed that led to the granting of [[shards]]. It is described in [[The Sundered Eagle]] 28, 32 and is important as it allows the [[polites]] to potentially escape being subject to a [[Vote of Ostracism]]. Polities may also of course negate shards by use of [[tokens]]. The decree of contrition must be heard during the Hermetic Assembly phase of the Tribunal gathering.
